Ear Pain

Parents know how common earaches are in children, but adults can get frequent ear pain, too. An earache may affect one or both ears, but the majority of the time it is in one ear. It may be constant or come and go, and the pain may be dull, sharp, or burning. If you have an ear infection, fever and temporary hearing loss may occur.

Is Otipax® a treatment for children only?

Otipax® can be used in both children and adults. Generally, children aged between 6 and 24 months are more susceptible to develop an acute otitis media (it affects between 75 and 80% of children in this age group).

This is because the Eustachian tube is shorter and more horizontal at this age, which makes it easier for infection to spread from the throat to the ear. However, some adults can also be affected. Otipax® can also be prescribed to relieve pain associated with ear barotrauma (change in pressure caused by a flight or scuba diving).

Are there different types of otitis?

Otitis is a general term for inflammation of the ear. There are different types of otitis, depending on the part of the ear that is inflamed (inner, middle or outer ear):

  • Otitis externa (external otitis) is mainly caused by bacteria present in the external auditory canal. It often occurs when the ear has remained wet after a swim, or in patients who tend to suffer from eczema or psoriasis.
  • Otitis media (infection of the middle ear) is generally caused by bacteria. Viruses can also cause acute otitis media, particularly as a result of influenza, cold, or change in pressure or contact with infected water. Bacteria or viruses colonize the middle ear via the Eustachian tube, which connects the nose and throat. The Eustachian tube becomes blocked, which creates an infection in the middle ear.
  • Otitis interna (internal otitis) can result from chronic otitis media, allergies or other types of infection (e.g. meningitis or sinusitis). It is the most serious form of otitis, and can cause irreversible damage such as hearing loss of varying severity.

Warning : It is essential to consult your doctor, who will make the diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment depending on the type of ear infection.
